About Ashante Taylorcox
My Identity: I identify as a light-skin African-American, Queer woman, fellow adoptee, sexual violence survivor, and neurodivergent clinician aimed at uplifting those from my community impacted by violence and oppression within their daily lives.
My Approach: I approach therapy as a collaborative process between the therapist and the client that is focused on deep inner work that will help challenge the ways you see the world and gain a better understanding of yourself as an individual who is deserving of love, care, gentleness, kindness, and understanding. When working with me, you will notice that my approach is very relational in nature and will support you, as the client, to learn how to build safe relationships within the therapeutic setting in ways that you can take out into the real world with your peers, family, partners, and community.
My Education: I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ, and a Master's Degree from New York University in Counseling for Mental health and Wellness with a dual degree/certification in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Public Health and Education.
About Ashante Taylorcox
My Training: I am an EMDR-trained clinician with additional extensive experience in treating trauma through somatic practices and art-based therapies with communities of color and 2SLGBTQ+ folx. I utilized a blend of attachment-based trauma therapy, internal family systems therapy, creative arts, and narrative therapy. I have experience working in private practice, nonprofit settings, group home settings, and acute care hospital settings.
My Values: As a clinician, I believe it is important for the client to choose a therapist that aligns with their values and understanding/views of the world. I take an anti-oppressive and decolonized approach to the work and believe that I cannot do this work without saying out loud that we inherently operate in a system and world that was never built for black and brown individuals to succeed. Through our time together, I hope to shift that narrative and place more control in your own lives.

What is EMDR
> EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a type of psychotherapy that supports clients in healing from symptoms and emotional distress as a result of trauma or a disturbing life experience.
> EMDR allows clients to focus briefly on trauma memories and utilize bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements or tapping) to help clients navigate through difficult, traumatic memories with the goal of decreasing the impact of the trauma memory on their day-to-day lives.
> EMDR does not make you forget that the trauma memory happened; it does support the impact of the memory on the client's brain by decreasing the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memory.

What is IFS
> IFS (Internal Family Systems Therapy) IFS is frequently used as an evidence-based psychotherapy, helping clients heal by accessing their protective and wounded inner parts. IFS creates inner and outer connectedness by helping people first access their Self and, from that core, come to understand and heal the parts of themselves that make themselves uniquely you.
> IFS allows clients to break down their feelings and emotions into parts: which are essentially feelings, thoughts, bodily sensations, and cumulative life experiences that foster an internal relationship that makes up who you are.
> The goal of IFS is to establish a healthy and balanced relationship between the client's different parts and their core self, which fosters understanding, empathy, and healing.
